This post is dedicated to my favorite book, The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I first read this book 2 years ago, and has since become my favorite book by far. The story is told in letter form to an unknown person. It is a sincere and sometimes uncomfortable story about a very intellectual 15 year old boy, Charlie, moving through his freshman year. Charlie is a wallflower who observes people and feels very deeply for the experiences occurring around him. His English teacher, who he develops a special relationship with, tells Charlie he uses thought to not participate in life. Charlie agrees to participate more, leading him to a close group of friends, dances, parties, drugs, love and sexuality. When Charlie feels happy, we feel happy, as if Charlie is a real person. However, happiness is only a small part of Charlie’s life. He is overcome by depression from a car accident his aunt was in and Charlie blames himself (read it and you will find out why). I am obviously barely surfacing the content of the book, so as not to spoil anything, but the situations I mention above captivate and immense the reader in his life so much, that the stories become a very real experience. One of the most interesting aspects of the book is that I don’t think there is a target demographic. Other than little kids, maybe at least 14 or 15, I feel this book can be appreciated, loved, and related too by anyone regardless of gender, ethnicity, etc, If anyone else has reads it, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
